No A264 access from Pease Pottage every night to 4 October, 8pm to 6am. On Sunday 25 October buses replace trains between Horsham and Three Bridges.

Two authorities dig up the roads around Horsham, and knowing which is which saves you searching the wrong website. West Sussex County Council looks after most local roads, from the A24 bypass to the village lanes. National Highways runs the M23, A23 and A27 (who does what). This page covers what is shut in and around the district right now, the long-running A29 problem at Pulborough, and the permanent facts that outlast any one set of cones: key routes, station parking and the park and ride.

Date list of closures around Horsham from 2 to 25 October 2026: no access to the A264 from Pease Pottage roundabout, M23 junction 11, every night to 4 October, 8pm to 6am; Friday 2 October the last day on the West Parade works record, with no reopening notice; no trains into Portsmouth and overnight buses between Three Bridges and Brighton on 3 and 4 October; closures of Coltstaple Lane, Horsham, and Wooddale Lane, Billingshurst, from 5 to 7 October; the M23 northbound link road from junction 8 to the M25 at junction 7 shut on the night of 6 October; Harbolets Road and West Chiltington Lane closed at times from 6 to 8 October; Brighton trains diverted via Horsham on 10 and 11 October; gas works with signals on North Heath Lane to 23 October and Bedford Road to 30 October from 12 October; no trains at London Victoria on 18 October; a one-day closure of Coolham Road, Brooks Green, on 21 October; and no trains between Three Bridges and Horsham on Sunday 25 October, with buses to Horsham and Billingshurst

Closed now and in the fortnight ahead (checked 2 October 2026)

Pease Pottage: no A264 access every night to Sunday 4 October. National Highways is still running survey work at M23 junction 11. The south-west section of Pease Pottage roundabout closes every night to the night of Sunday 4 October, 8pm to 6am, including the weekend. The closure report says there is no access to the A264 while it is shut, and gives no diversion (National Highways 7-day closure report, last updated 3.30pm on 1 October). That roundabout is the usual way home to Horsham from the M23 and Gatwick. The same report has no Pease Pottage roundabout closure booked from Monday 5 October to Wednesday 7 October.

West Parade: today is the last day on the works record, and nobody has said it is open. West Sussex County Council closed the road on 20 July to rebuild the junction of North Parade, West Parade, Hurst Road and Wimblehurst Road. The works were due to finish on Friday 11 September (WSCC temporary traffic order, dated 16 July 2026). The county council’s street works record says they “could run through until 2 October 2026”, and on 2 October it still showed that date as the finish. The record has not been changed since 1.08pm on 18 September (WSCC works record, via StreetGuide).

The county council has published no reopening notice and no reason for the three-week overrun. Its news page carried nothing on West Parade on 2 October, and its July announcement still gives the old 11 September finish. The contractor is Edburton Contractors, on 01903 813665. When it reopens, the finished junction brings:

  • two new controlled pedestrian crossings, one replacing the island on Wimblehurst Road and one near Hurst Road
  • a contraflow cycle route on West Parade, with its own signals at the junction
  • modernised traffic signals
  • a new 20mph speed limit on West Parade
  • additional 7.5 tonne weight restrictions on surrounding roads
  • new signs for local cycle routes

The M23 northbound link to the M25 shuts on Tuesday night, 6 October. The link road from the M23 northbound at junction 8 onto the M25 at junction 7, clockwise and anticlockwise, closes from 10pm to 5.30am for emergency carriageway repairs. The diversion uses the National Highways and local authority network (same report). Junction 7 is the M25 interchange, so this is the route north out of the district. The southbound gantry closures between junctions 7 and 8 have finished. The link road closure we listed for Friday 2 October is not in the 1 October edition of the report.

The A23 at Dale Hill: two months of night closures, diverted through the district. National Highways has made an order to realign the Dale Hill junction, where the A281 meets the A23 north of Brighton. The work is expected to last about two months from Monday 21 September, with overnight closures between 8pm and 6am. The A23 can shut between Mill Road roundabout and Dale Hill. The northbound slip roads at Dale Hill can shut round the clock, and a 50mph limit applies northbound. The diversion routes use the A24, A272 and A283, the district’s own main roads, along with the A23, A27 and A259 (National Highways order NH/SE/2026/A23/55, via the Public Notice Portal). The closure report shows the Dale Hill northbound exit slip shut every night to 7 October except Sunday 4 October.

In Horsham town.

  • Kings Road: two-way signals to Wednesday 7 October. County highway improvement works started on 14 September and take in the footway, carriageway and verge (WSCC works record, via StreetGuide).
  • Coltstaple Lane: Southern Water closure from 5 October. The record lists repair works starting on or after Monday 5 October and running to 7 October, with the road closed for some or all of that time (Southern Water works record, via StreetGuide).
  • Gas works start on Monday 12 October. Southern Gas Networks has booked North Heath Lane from 12 to 23 October and Bedford Road from 12 to 30 October. Both are under multi-way signals rather than a closure. The North Heath Lane record was updated on 30 September and still gives those dates. Ramsey Close follows, from 26 October to 13 November (same records).
  • On-street parking went up on Thursday 1 October. Town centre pay and display is now £2.10 an hour, up from £1.90. Permit, visitor and dispensation charges rose across the Horsham and Billingshurst zones too. The full table is in our report on the new charges.
  • Waiting is banned on the north side of Greenway, 43 metres either side of the construction access to the Greenway Junior School site, 7am to 5pm daily. That order came into operation on 20 July and is expected to last 18 months (WSCC notice).
  • The Carfax closes on Fridays from 30 October. Horsham District Council’s list of approved closures now has “Seasonal Friday Lates Horsham” from 30 October to 18 December 2026. It shuts the Carfax from Blackhorse Way to the Copnall Way junction, including Swan Yard, with access only on Blackhorse Way and the Causeway. The list gives no times for it (Horsham District Council road closures).
  • Two November dates are on the same list, read again on 2 October:
  • Sunday 8 November, 10am to 1.30pm: East Street, North Street and its side roads, Park Street, Park Way, Blackhorse Way, the Carfax including Swan Yard, South Street and the Causeway, each for part of that window. The Causeway is shut longest, 10.15am to 1.30pm.
  • Friday 20 November, 3.30pm to 8.30pm: the Carfax from Blackhorse Way to the Copnall Way junction, including Swan Yard, and Park Place, with access only on Blackhorse Way and the Causeway.
  • Also on Sunday 8 November: rolling closures in Billingshurst from 10.15am, Storrington’s Old Mill Drive, High Street and Church Street from 2pm to 3.30pm, Church Place in Pulborough, part of the Downs Link and Fairbank Road in Southwater from 10am to noon, and Henfield’s High Street and Church Street in two short slots between 9am and 11.30am.

The council’s list names the roads and times but not the events.

In the villages. Every entry below is a street works record; each says the road is closed “for some or all of the period”, not every day, so check the signs.

  • Blakes Farm Road, Southwater: Southern Water signals to Tuesday 6 October. The work started on 14 September and the record was updated on 30 September (Southern Water works record).
  • Wooddale Lane, Billingshurst: a one-day county closure booked for Monday 5 October (WSCC works record).
  • East Street, Rusper: county signals from 5 October. The county council’s record lists highway improvement works with two-way signals, starting on or after 5 October and able to run until 16 October 2028. It does not say what the works are for (WSCC works record).
  • Harbolets Road, West Chiltington: county works from 6 to 8 October, and a one-day closure of West Chiltington Lane, Billingshurst on Thursday 8 October. A second Harbolets Road booking, added on 1 October, runs from 26 to 28 October (WSCC works records).
  • The Street, Nutbourne: Southern Gas Networks works to Friday 9 October, started on 28 September (SGN works record).
  • Coolham Road, Brooks Green: a one-day county closure on Wednesday 21 October (WSCC works record).
  • Littleworth Lane, Partridge Green: Southern Water works to 6 December. The record lists utility repair and maintenance works, which started on 29 June. It gives no reason or diversion (Southern Water works record, via StreetGuide).
  • Greatham Lane, Greatham: county highway works to 2 November, from 3 August (WSCC works record, via StreetGuide).
  • Late October closures are already booked: Lyons Road, Slinfold (Southern Water, 26 to 30 October), Strood Lane, Warnham (county, 26 to 30 October), Park Lane, West Grinstead (county, 27 to 29 October), and the Old Stopham Bridge access road at Pulborough (SGN, 19 October to 13 November) (works records).
  • The A29 at Church Hill, Pulborough stays shut, as it has been since the 2022 landslip. The county’s works record for it now runs to 31 March 2027. The full story is in the A29 section below.

On the motorway and trunk roads. These come from the National Highways closure report, last updated at 3.30pm on Thursday 1 October. National Highways now re-issues it every day, and this edition covers the nights from Thursday 1 to Wednesday 7 October. All closures run overnight.

The A24 and the A27 west of Brighton are clear of National Highways closures in this edition (National Highways 7-day closure report).

Finished since we last checked.

  • The M23 southbound gantry closures between junctions 7 and 8 ran to the night of 1 October.
  • Bar Lane, Southwater (county works to 1 October) and Marlpost Road, Southwater (UK Power Networks, to 30 September) have dropped off the works records.
  • The record for Church Street, Amberley, which ran to 30 September, has gone.
  • Two speed limit consultations closed on 1 October: the Wickhurst Green 20mph zone in Broadbridge Heath and the longer A283 40mph limit at Storrington and Washington. No decision has been published yet; the details are in our report on the two proposals.

No new county closure orders for the district this week. We checked every West Sussex notice added to the Public Notice Portal since 28 September. The only one in the district was the Run Barns Green closure order for 27 September, which has run (WSCC order dated 24 September 2026).

Six footpaths and bridleways are shut, four for broken bridges

These closures do not show up on a roadworks map, but they will end a walk. All six are county council orders, and every one says the same thing: there is no alternative route on the rights of way network.

  • West Grinstead, Public Footpath 1814: closed from 9 September for six months, for 420 metres from its junction with Footpath 1815 eastwards to the Downs Link. Broken bridge (WSCC order dated 3 September 2026).
  • Shipley, Public Footpath 1889: closed since 16 September, for about 175 metres from Footpath 1888 eastwards to Shipley Road. The first notice gave a start of 23 September; a second order, dated 17 September, says it came into effect on 16 September. The reason is tree felling and enabling works linked to reserved matters on a planning permission. It lasts six months or until the works are done (WSCC No. 2 Order, dated 17 September 2026).
  • Shipley, Public Bridleway 1966: closed since 23 August, for 912 metres from the junction with Bridleway 1966_1 south-westwards to Countryman Lane. Broken bridge. The order lasts six months or until the works are done (WSCC order dated 20 August 2026).
  • West Chiltington, Public Footpath 2437: closed from 20 August for six months, for 450 metres from Harborough Hill south-westwards to Monkmead Lane. The reason here is surface erosion (WSCC order dated 20 August 2026).
  • Parham, Public Footpath 2430: closed from 5 August for six months, from the A283 Mare Hill Road southwards to Church Lane. Broken bridge (WSCC order dated 30 July 2026).
  • Itchingfield, Public Footpath 1628_1: closed from 2 July for six months, for 1,190 metres from Bridleway 1630 south-eastwards to the Downs Link. Broken bridge (WSCC order dated 2 July 2026).

Queries about any of these go to the county council’s rights of way team on 01243 777620.

On the trains: Portsmouth this weekend, no Crawley line on 25 October

Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October: no trains into Portsmouth. Engineering work between Cosham and Portsmouth Harbour means buses replace Southern trains between Havant and Portsmouth & Southsea or Portsmouth Harbour all weekend. Southern lists the Horsham to Portsmouth Harbour service among the routes affected. Checked against Southern’s own listing on 2 October, it is still on (Southern, 3 October).

That same weekend, buses replace trains between Three Bridges and Brighton overnight: from about 1am to 7.15am on the Sunday morning for Southern and Thameslink, and no Gatwick Express at all until 7am on the Sunday, then an amended timetable with longer journey times. If you are catching an early flight on Sunday 4 October, plan for that (Southern, 3 October).

Sunday 18 October: no trains at London Victoria. Engineering work in the Victoria area closes all lines there all day. Southern says trains that usually run to or from Victoria will run to or from London Bridge instead, on a reduced timetable. The same day, buses replace trains between Littlehampton and Barnham, Bognor Regis and Chichester. Horsham’s Victoria to Portsmouth Harbour trains are diverted to run between London Bridge and Littlehampton via Horsham (Southern, 18 October). No trains call at Earlswood or Salfords that day either. On Saturday 17 October Victoria stays open with a reduced service (Southern, 17 October).

Sunday 25 October: no trains between Three Bridges and Horsham. Engineering work closes all lines between the two stations all day. Southern says buses will replace its trains between Three Bridges and Horsham or Billingshurst, and Thameslink trains between Three Bridges and Horsham. Southern’s London Victoria to Portsmouth Harbour trains, which normally run through Horsham, will be diverted via Hove. Trains between Littlehampton or Portsmouth Harbour and Ore will also call at Three Bridges to connect with the buses (Southern, 25 October). Southern’s listing does not say whether any trains will run between Horsham and Littlehampton that day.

Further ahead, put three dates in the diary. Horsham is on the diversion route when the Brighton Main Line shuts, so the town’s trains get busier rather than cancelled:

  • Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October 2026: no trains between Brighton and Three Bridges. Southern’s listing, checked again on 2 October, says direct trains between London Victoria and Brighton will be diverted via Horsham, Littlehampton and Hove, with extended journey times. There are no Gatwick Express trains on the Saturday, or before 7am on the Sunday (Southern, 10 October). Southern advises using the diverted train rather than the replacement buses.
  • Sunday 10 January 2027: no trains between Gatwick Airport and Purley or East Croydon.
  • Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 February 2027: a nine-day closure between Three Bridges and Lewes, Brighton or Hove via Haywards Heath, timed for the half-term holiday (Southern Brighton Main Line engineering work).

The A29 at Pulborough: the district’s longest-running road problem

This is not ordinary roadworks. A landslip on 28 December 2022 shut the A29 Church Hill. The county council’s own page still describes the road as closed between the Church Place and A283 Lower Street junctions, with a signed diversion in place. The council’s geotechnical advice is that it is not safe to reopen to vehicles or pedestrians, and that disturbing the embankment could make the slip worse. Both embankments have moved and worsened since the original closure. The council does not own the land the embankments stand on. That is why the debris is still on the carriageway and why the case went legal.

The council served statutory notices on the landowners in February 2024, requiring tree works. The landowners appealed. At a magistrates’ court hearing on 7 and 8 January 2026 those appeals were dismissed. As of the council’s 10 August 2026 update, there is still no date for a permanent fix (WSCC A29 Pulborough page).

The signed diversion runs the long way round:

  • the A283 through Storrington and Washington
  • the A24 north through Ashington, Shipley and West Grinstead
  • the A272 west through Coolham, Coneyhurst and Billingshurst
  • the A29 south through Adversane

Pedestrians are directed onto signed bridleway and rights of way routes, and the council asks people not to move the barriers.

One change is coming to that stretch. The county council has consulted on permanent speed limits on the A29 and adjoining roads at Coldwaltham, Bury and Fittleworth:

  • 20mph through Coldwaltham village
  • 30mph between Bury Gate and Watersfield
  • 40mph between Coldwaltham and Pulborough

Comments closed on 20 August 2026. A month on, the county council has moved the scheme to its closed TRO consultations list but has not published a decision, and no made order had appeared on the Public Notice Portal when we checked on 20 September (WSCC notice, reference TRO/HOR8015/RC).

Bigger schemes on the horizon

The next generation of works around Horsham will come from development. The West of Ifield scheme on the Crawley border includes a full application for its first-phase roads, the Crawley Western Multi-Modal Corridor with access from Charlwood Road; our Horsham planning news page tracks where it has got to. In Rusper, the 43-home Millfields Farm site comes with a new access on East Street, crossing improvements and a wider 30mph zone. The parish council is still carrying the June 2026 highways agreement notice and no construction date has been published (Rusper Parish Council notice). The Broadbridge Heath junction rebuild, Newbridge roundabout and the downgraded old bypass finished in 2021. Those are the settled state of the west side, not pending work.

The evergreen facts: routes, station parking, park and ride

The key routes. The A24 carries north to south traffic past the town between Dorking and Worthing. The A264 links Horsham to Crawley and M23 junction 11. The A281 threads through the town centre towards Guildford one way and Henfield the other. The A272 crosses the district east to west, and the A29 takes the Billingshurst corridor towards Bognor. When any one of them fails, its traffic lands on the others. That is why one overnight M23 closure can make Roffey busy at midnight.

Station parking. The car park at Horsham station is run by APCOA for Southern, open 24 hours, from £5.10 a day, with five Blue Badge bays, four EV charging spaces and two motorbike spaces. Parking is free for Blue Badge holders, but the car park is ANPR-controlled, so you still have to register the car. The two official sources disagree on size: APCOA lists 185 spaces, National Rail lists 220 (APCOA, National Rail). Train times, season costs and the last trains home are on the trains to London page.

Hop Oast park and ride. Still running, seven days a week, and cheap. Metrobus routes 23 and 98 serve the site off the B2237 Worthing Road (RH13 0AR), with a £2.70 day ticket valid in both directions for up to five people, or £1.80 singles before 9am Monday to Friday. Concessionary passes are free after 9.30am on weekdays and any time at weekends. The site opens 4am to 9pm daily, the exit stays open 24 hours, and there is a 2-metre height limit. Last buses back from town are 10.12pm on route 23 and 11.42pm on route 98 Monday to Saturday, dropping to 4.34pm and 6.27pm on Sundays (Metrobus). For a Saturday in town it comfortably undercuts the town centre car parks, but check that Sunday finish before you leave the car.

How to check what is dug up today

Frequently asked questions

Can I get onto the A264 from Pease Pottage at night?

Not until Monday 5 October. National Highways is closing the south-west section of Pease Pottage roundabout, at M23 junction 11, every night to the night of Sunday 4 October, 8pm to 6am. The closure report says there is no access to the A264 while it is shut (National Highways).

Is West Parade in Horsham open again?

Not confirmed. The county council’s street works record gives Friday 2 October as the last day, and it has not been changed since 18 September. On 2 October the council had published no reopening notice and no reason for the delay. The works were first due to finish on 11 September 2026 (WSCC works record, via StreetGuide).

Are there trains from Horsham to Portsmouth on 3 and 4 October?

Not all the way. Buses replace Southern trains between Havant and Portsmouth & Southsea or Portsmouth Harbour all that weekend, and Southern lists the Horsham to Portsmouth Harbour service among those affected (Southern).

Are there trains from Horsham to Crawley on Sunday 25 October?

No. Engineering work closes the line between Three Bridges and Horsham all day, and buses replace Southern and Thameslink trains between Three Bridges and Horsham or Billingshurst (Southern).

Is the M23 closed at night?

On one night this week. The link road from the M23 northbound at junction 8 onto the M25 at junction 7 closes on Tuesday 6 October, 10pm to 5.30am, for emergency carriageway repairs. The southbound gantry closures between junctions 7 and 8 have finished (National Highways).

How much is on-street parking in Horsham now?

£2.10 an hour in the town centre since 1 October 2026, up from £1.90. Billingshurst’s Daux Road went from £1.10 to £1.30, and permit, visitor and dispensation charges rose across both controlled parking zones. Our report on the new charges has the full table (WSCC notice of variation, 10 September 2026).

When is the Carfax next closed?

On Fridays from 30 October to 18 December, for “Seasonal Friday Lates”, from Blackhorse Way to the Copnall Way junction including Swan Yard; the council’s list gives no times. It also shuts on Sunday 8 November, 10.15am to 11.30am, and on Friday 20 November, 3.30pm to 8.30pm, with Park Place (Horsham District Council).

Why is the A29 at Pulborough still shut?

A landslip on 28 December 2022 closed Church Hill, and the council’s geotechnical advice is that it is not safe to reopen. The embankments are on private land and have moved again since. The landowners’ appeals against the council’s tree notices were dismissed at a January 2026 hearing. The council’s 10 August 2026 update still gives no date for a permanent repair (WSCC).

Where do I find live roadworks around Horsham today?

The county council feeds its works into the one.network West Sussex map. National Highways publishes a closure report for the M23, A23 and A27, updated twice a day on weekdays.

Does Horsham have a park and ride?

Yes, Hop Oast, south of town off the Worthing Road: Metrobus routes 23 and 98, seven days a week, £2.70 for a day ticket covering up to five people (Metrobus).

Sources

Roadworks change week to week. Check the live maps on the day you travel. The closures above were checked against their sources on 2 October 2026, and the station parking and park and ride figures were last checked on 30 August. Two things we could not confirm today: whether West Parade has actually reopened, because the county council has published nothing since its record was last changed on 18 September, and why it ran three weeks late. The street works records we quote say a road is “closed for some or all of the period”; they do not say which days, so check the signs. Only closures with a statutory notice, a National Highways entry, a street works record, a council closure list or a train operator’s own engineering listing behind them are listed here.
