Bin day, parking charges, and the council tax band on a house somebody is thinking of buying. Between them those three account for most of what anyone needs from a local website in an ordinary month, so we look after them properly, set them against Horsham District Council’s published figures, and say on the page when we last checked.

The rest of the time we read the record. Applications and decisions for Horsham itself, for Southwater, Billingshurst, Storrington and Pulborough, what gets agreed in the council chamber, crime data by ward, food hygiene inspections. All public, all fairly dull to sit down with, and all worth knowing about well before the diggers turn up. We write it in plain English and say where each number came from, with a link.

Horsham is one market town and a great many villages, and a decision taken a few minutes’ walk from the Carfax can change a lane five miles out. We try to report it that way round.
